BEHIND THE SPOTS
WHO IS THAT CAT? KASH EXPLAINED
Meet KASH the Leopard, our inimitable mascot
The story of the leopard getting its spots, most famously told in Rudyard Kipling’s 1902 Just So Stories, describes how a plain-skinned leopard living in the high veldt of Southern Africa adapts to a new, shadowed habitat by acquiring black spots on its tan hide to camouflage itself. According to researchers at Bristol University, “The leopard’s dark, rosette-like markings bare evolution’s response to the creature’s surroundings.”
Originally, the leopard’s plain coat allowed it to hide on the open, elevated grassland. But there was a need for change when prey – including leopards, giraffes, zebras, and cheetahs – moved to inhabit dark, wooded forests. They adapted to the new setting by growing stripes and spots to blend in with the dappled sunlight of the territory.
More modern versions, as well as children’s stories, often focus on a plain leopard wanting spots so to be unique. But the story of the leopard and its spots remains fundamentally a tale of adaptation to environment, a perfect symbol to represent our work as an interior design firm.
The leopard is a symbol of strength, courage, and patience. Its ability to stay hidden and strike at the right moment reflects the importance of timing and strategy in life. With an acronym for his name based on our founder’s initials, we chose this regal creature as our firm’s logo for its strong, confident, highly adaptable nature and its ability to overcome challenges with grace and determination. The leopard reminds us to be fearless and daring, qualities that serve us well in our creative pursuits at Kathleen Hay Designs.
