OUR FOUNDER, THE SERVICES WE OFFER, AND WHAT OUR CLIENTS ARE SAYING

Our studio is based thirty miles out to sea on the quaint windswept island of Nantucket, but in the spirit of the Island’s historic whaling past, we explore and serve the world, designing interiors beyond our island shores. We harness the power of home through a collaborative team approach where the client is the focus. We take projects of all sizes and scales and remain committed to bringing our clients’ visions to reality through an intentional and care-filled dialogue. No two projects are alike, just as no two clients have the same needs or desires. Our studied logical approach to the design process, where listening is highlighted, assures a client-centered outcome with a holistic end-result, be it a residential home, commercial office space, restaurant, or boutique hotel. We offer a full-range of services including interior design, architectural rendering and drafting, graphic design, and home-styling.

ABOUT KATHLEEN

Logic is her guiding method, but wonder is her Muse.

Kathleen has over 25 years of experience in both the business and creative sides of the design industry, giving her a wealth of knowledge on best practices and principles. New construction is a specialty, with special emphasis on high-end residential and commercial design. Whether a small jewel box or a large, ground-up estate, Hay and her talented team take the design of any project seriously and with integrity no matter the size or scale. She collaborates closely with clients, architects, and builders throughout the process to achieve a winning result through a cooperative team approach and is poised to tackle the work with a discerning and discriminating eye, a sensitive touch, and keen attention to detail.

Kathleen is a collaborator at heart. The single most important factor in all her projects remains the people who will inhabit them. She listens closely to her clients’ wishes to execute a design based on their unique perspective and personal expression. The goal is always a beautiful environment – one that reflects both the people that occupy the spaces and the professional vision that guided its completion.

THE BALANCE OF FORM AND FUNCTION

A house will tell you what it wants.

Hay views interior design with the awareness of an alchemist: mixing, blending, and transforming elements to achieve something truly original. She believes strongly that houses should be appropriate to their time, the setting, and their owner, remaining open and flexible to the needs of her clients and the varied locations of the projects on which she works. Kathleen and her team address diverse challenges and singular mandates with an excited and inspired approach in a confident, respectful manner, bringing fresh perspective and a distinctive viewpoint. They achieve a curated finish with a soulful human touch through functional floor plans, thoughtful lighting selections, sensitive acoustics, the tactile feel of fabrics, floor coverings, and soft furnishings, and art that speaks to its inhabitants.

Although Kathleen’s designs strike harmonious balance between form and function, she always brings unexpected elements to her projects. She favors serene yet layered spaces infused with bold, electrifying objects punctuated by treasured personal items – rooms that invite you into their calm embrace while capturing and holding your attention with surprise and innovation.

"I highly recommend Kathleen Hay and her team based on my incredibly positive experience working with KHD on a major renovation (near gutting) project on Nantucket. Kathleen is personable, creative, and practical, with a wealth of experience and productive working relationships on the island and off. Kathleen helped me assemble a true dream team for my job (contractor, architect, designer and landscaper), and she was involved in every piece of the project. Kathleen has impeccable style, great vision and foresight, and is simply a pleasure to work with. She asks the right questions and is a good listener. Having never owned property on Nantucket before our work together, I really valued Kathleen’s insights about the unique needs and challenges of island entertaining. Her support staff is professional, responsive, and equally delightful. We absolutely love our “new” home, which is simultaneously gorgeous and livable. We couldn’t be more pleased with the process the final product thanks to KHD."
